| It would appear that retailers (and their association) are being careful to prevent you finding this information so for my own recollection and to stuff their careful system up you will find the scanning code of practice for computerised checkout systems in supermarkets 2004 as as well as other codes of conduct at this page. The following are the main bits (from the downloadable PDF): 3. The Item-Free and Multiple Purchases Policies 3.1 If the scanned price of an item is higher than the shelf price, the customer shall be entitled to that item free. 3.2 Where multiple items bearing identical bar codes, or the same PLU number, are purchased and scan at a price higher than the shelf price, the customer shall be entitled to the first item free and the others at the lower (that is the shelf) price. Where multiple pre-packed items, of the same product, which have a set price per kilo (and therefore do not have an identical bar code) are scanned at a higher price than the shelf price, the customer shall be entitled to the first pack scanned for free and the other packs at the correct price per kilo. 3.3 Where there is a difference between the shelf price and the scanned price of the item, the discrepancy will be remedied immediately by the store. 3.4 A scanning error shall be deemed to have occurred when an item has been scanned or the correct PLU number keyed-in and a price higher than the shelf price is registered on the checkout terminal display. It is not necessary for a customer to have paid for the item or to have left the store to be entitled to receive the item free under the Code. Where an operator error has occurred, that is the wrong PLU number is keyed in or the wrong product is identified by the checkout operator, the consumer is not entitled to the product for free. 3.5 If a customer removes, alters or otherwise interferes with a shelf price label or bar code, the customer loses her/his right to receive the item free. 4. Retailer Responsibilities 4.1 Retailers undertake to apply the Code in spirit as well as in the letter, so that high ethical standards are followed by all relevant retailers. 4.2 The retailer is obliged to ensure that the interests of customers are protected by the development of inhouse procedures designed to ensure the integrity and accuracy of computerised checkout systems at all times. 4.3 The retailer will also encourage customer awareness of the Code through the display of signage at each checkout or each entry point to the store. This sign must be clearly visible to customers standing at the checkout or upon entry to the supermarket. 4.4 Staff are required to be familiar with the provisions of the Code and to ensure that customer inquiries or grievances about the Code are handled in a courteous and efficient manner. The retailer will ensure the maintenance of staff training programs to that end. 4.5 The retailer will maintain supplies of Code information materials and provide customers with a copy of the Code leaflet on request. 4.6 Common sense should dictate the period in which a store will accept a customer complaint. As a guideline for customers and store staff, however, it would be reasonable to deal with a complaint up to one month after the error is alleged to have occurred. (See also Section 10 below). |

To support encryption applications, bicom also includes a passphrase-protection option that will automatically encrypt after compressing, or decrypt before decompressing. The cipher used is the current AES proposal, Rijndael. It is applied in a unique way, however, that preserves the bijective property of the compressor, and almost never changes the size of a compressed file. |

| Bugtoaster is a free (I think) desktop front-end for an Internet-based service that helps you straighten out problems with your computer. Bugtoaster runs from your system tray, waiting until something goes wrong. When your operating system or an application crashes, Bugtoaster catches the details and forwards the information to the online Bugtoaster database. The crashes are then correlated and forwarded to the appropriate software vendors. You can check the databases for details or fixes, and choose to receive e-mail reports about all crashes or just the ones you've reported. Sounds like an excellent idea. Hopefully like me you are dismayed at the extrememely poor quality of Microsoft's products and in fact Windows products in general. This sort of tool has the potential to force these vendors to care about their bugs, that is fix them! The online bug database should also be useful in developing work arounds to problems you might be experiencing. |

The program is quite intelligent about detecting page movements and does not simply rely on server 301 or 302 return codes. You can also configure some of the "hidden" moves done by some sites as being acceptable so you won't have warning messages which you always ignore. This program can also check Windows shortcuts and OS/2 Workplace shell objects. Under windows this means that validating "Favorites" and similar directory trees of URL objects is easy. Note that there is a PPWIZARD header file available to create commented links from these OS/2 or Windows URL objects allowing fairly simple drag and drop creation of html links pages which can have extensive comments (have a look at my links they were all created this way - you can remove/modify virtually everything). |

Sound was choppy then disappeared in the DIXV player. It compresses heaps better that the MPEG 1 files I was creating.

| The Human Genome Project is nearing completion, and scientists are working hard to develop the understanding needed to use this wealth of genetic information in ways that will be significant to medicine and humankind. One of the most important ways to do this is to study the other genomes and individual gene sequences that are already available to us. By understanding how these genomes work, we will be able to put the huge amounts of data (over 50, 000 genes and 3 billion nucleotide base pairs) from the Human Genome Project into biological and medical context, giving it real meaning. To design these large numbers of protein sequences, we need lots of computers. By running the Genome@home protein sequence design client, you can lend us your computer while you're not using it, for as long or as little as you like. It simply runs alongside your other programs and does its calculations in the unused cpu time while you're away from your desk, or even while you're working on your computer. You won't notice a loss of speed, and your computer will work as usual. All you see is a small window that shows you the protein sequences you're designing. If you don't want to look at it, just minimize the window and move it to a corner of your desktop. A day or two's worth of running Genome@home is enough to design new protein sequences that the world has never seen before. All the sequences get added to the Genome@home database, so every little bit helps. I have stopped using this product as it is impossible to supply feedback and it has a fatal flaw which caused me to do one lengthy sequence 3 times. I've got better things to do with my CPU. |

I am using this to package my PPWIZARD HTML preprocessor as it is very simple to use (although future projects will use my own MAKEMSI tool). I had everything worked out within an hour or two. It has one only configuration file and works with your directory structure. I'm very impressed (although I will be reporting all sorts of suggestions and some "features"). I have created a "NSIS_HDR" add-on for ppwizard which simplifies the creation of the install scripts so the effort involved in creating a new package should be trivial. |
