The registry is a basic a storage mechanism for windows & user configuration, for more information see this http://www.techsupportalert.com/content/deeper-windows-registry.htm.

It is easy to read or write to the registry using VBSCRIPT, for batch files you will need to use a tool, for example the "REG" command.
